There you can find general information abour Almaty region
Almaty region - the region in the south-east of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It was formed on March 10, 1932 as part of the Kazakh ASSR, and up to 1992 it was accepted to spell Alma-Ata region. The administrative centre of the region was the city of Alma-Ata; in April 2001 the regional centre was moved from Alma-Ata to Taldykorgan by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The population of the region is 2 059 200 people (at the beginning of 2020).

Geography

Almaty region borders the following regions of Kazakhstan: Zhambyl Oblast in the west, Karaganda Oblast in the northwest (the water border runs along Lake Balkhash), and East-Kazakhstan Oblast in the north-east. The region was joined in 1997 by the former Taldy-Kurgan Oblast, once located north of Almaty proper. To the east it borders on China (Xinjiang UAR), to the south on the Republic of Kyrgyzstan (Chui and Issyk-Kul oblasts). The region has a rather complex geographical characteristics and very diverse terrain.
The north-western part is a semi-desert plain with the Taukum, Belsekseul and Moyynkum sand massifs. The relief is slightly inclined towards Lake Balkhash and is cut by the ancient riverbeds of the Ili, Karatal, Aksu, Koksu, Lepsy, Ayagoz, the most significant of which is Bakanas. Two separate massifs - in the south and east - extend the Zailiysky Alatau and Dzhungarsky Alatau mountain ranges (the Tien Shan mountain system). At the junction of their gradually descending slopes is the middle course of the Ili River. The slopes themselves are abundant in the cones of its tributaries (Charyn, Chiliq, Almaty, Kurty, etc.).

Nature

The area is located between the North Tien Shan ridges in the south, Lake Balkhash in the northwest and the Ili River in the north-east; it borders China in the east.
The entire northern half is occupied by the slightly sloping northward plain of the southern Semirechye, or Pribalkhashia (300-500 m high), crossed by dry channels - tankanas, with massifs of ridged and loose sand (Sary-Yesikatrau, Taukum). The southern part is occupied by ridges up to 5000 m high: Ketmen, Zailiysky Alatau and the northern spurs of Kungei Alatau. To the north, the ridges are bordered by foothills and narrow foothill plains. The entire southern part is an area of high seismicity.
The northern, plains part is characterized by a sharp continental climate, relatively cold winters down to -35 °C and hot summers up to +42 °C. Precipitation is only 110 mm per year. In the foothill zone the climate is milder, with precipitation of up to 500-600 mm. The mountains have a pronounced vertical belt; the amount of precipitation reaches 700-1000 mm per year. The vegetation period in the foothills and the plain is 205-225 days.
The north and north-west are almost devoid of surface runoff; the only river here is the Ili River, which forms a heavily developed wetland delta and flows into the western part of Lake Balkhash. In the southern, foothill part, the river network is relatively dense; most of the rivers (Kurty, Kaskelenka, Talgar, Esik, Turgen, Chilik, Charyn, etc.) originate in the mountains and usually do not reach the Ili River; the rivers are lost in the sands or separated for irrigation. There are many small freshwater lakes in the mountains (Bolshoy Almaty, etc.) and mineral springs (Alma-Arasan, etc.).

History

On March 10, 1932 the Alma-Ata region of the Kazakh ASSR (as part of the RSFSR) was formed, from December 5, 1936 - as part of the Kazakh SSR with its centre in Alma-Ata. The region consisted of 18 districts.

At the end of 1939 a part of districts was transferred to Dzhambul and Semipalatinsk regions, 23 districts remained as part of Alma-Ata, including 7 newly formed ones.

In March 1944 Taldy-Kurgan region was separated from its structure, where 11 districts were transferred.

At the end of 1959 the city of Alma-Ata was separated from the region. In the same year the Alma-Ata and Taldy-Kurgan regions were united, then in 1968 Taldy-Kurgan region was again allocated.

The last merger of the two regions, Almaty and Taldykorgan, took place in 1997.

The region consists of 17 districts and 3 cities of regional subordination (Taldykorgan, Kapshagay, Tekeli).

In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan № 585 of April 14, 2001 "On the redeployment of the regional centre of Almaty region" the city of Taldykorgan became the regional centre.

On September 2, 2019 the territory of 10.92 km² was excluded from the structure of the region and transferred to Zhambyl oblast.
